Making money from directory site?

Why would you try scraping the bottom of the barrel with backlinks as a service, when you could sell ad spots on a directory in my opinion. I dont know if your site is broken up by niche or geo, sounds like niche though. Sell spots at the top of the page or make a preferred vendor list/page/option. B2B marketing is pretty unrestricted when you think of it compared to B2C where you cannot email in a lot of cases without permission or call them do to the DNC registry. Hire a VA to do some cold emailing to people in this niche.
So you’re saying it’s better to offer the back links for free but earn money from the ads?

I dont know how much a backlink is worth, some cents now days? I bought 100+ for $30 or so recently. Ok, again I dont know your sites interface...
But, If you sell ad space in some form. Whether it be above organic links (like Google Ads), banners or a separate page; I imagine you can sell this space for a nice sum if you are in a nice niche. Dentists, Chiropractors, lawyers and such have deep pockets and often dont understand online marketing like some of us on this forum. I dont know your traffic or niche even. But if you collect $200-300 per space across multiple spaces on a subscription basis Id imagine it would dwarf selling backlinks to people who complain.
How many people outside of the IM space do you know who understand backlinks? How many understand that you have highly targeted traffic that can get them SALES? Id say the latter is a higher ticket and easier sale.
Im actually contemplating something in the classifieds/directory space using NFT stuff thats out now. But thats another story and I dont want to get into the angle I want to use. But it revolves around paid ads.

It’s actually a health/medical niche so yeah it’s pretty decent. It’s a very old directory site going back some 15 years and I just bought the domain and restored the old site from Wayback machine. The site is so old and not even mobile friendly so I think I’ll have to completely recreate with a modern directory on Wordpress. As the site hasn’t been used for some time there is no traffic anymore but DR is still 43. So would I actually get more traffic by creating a new one? Will this harm my DR score?
Nope, none. It has been offline for a few years. If I recreate it am I likely to be able to generate traffic again?

It's DR 43 and you checked using Ahrefs?
The backlinks established should bring you some traffic.
You could do backlink exchange with sites you list to even further increase domain authority, or charge them for it.
Sell VIP ad spots. You can also monetize using an affiliate program in your niche.

It may have some traffic if it had many backlinks. If it was offline for years I don't think it would be a lot or something that you could monetize.
I bought domain recently with a good backlinks such as wikipedia and it has some traffic, but nothing serious. I am still thinking on what to do about it, but it has a good name to put some news there or entertainment content.
