They say 1 good quality backlink is better than 100 low quality backlinks. So I found a domain with backlinks having ahrefs DR of 91,69,72 and 79. Just these four backlinks and they are articles poinitng to the homepage all based on the same niche. If I try buying those links then it will cost me thousands of dollars If i make a site around this domain for low competition keywords, how likely will it rank.

Yes and No. In my opinion it still depends on how specific the niche is.
I quickly ranked my site with 3 extraordinary high quality articles in 2018 written by an ex-NY Times journalist.
The niche was rather small and very specific, but it fascinated me how fast I got to #1 page in Google and was between authority sites.
Today I would get some .EDU, .GOV and Wikipedia, plus reputable PR media to get similar results.

Btw. no need to spend thousands of $. There are number of good BHW sellers.

I can absolutely agree with your first sentence, @Nandhugp . But you can also use other techniques if you don't want to spend thousands of dollars, like buying some organic traffic - traffic is a very important factor in the eyes of Google.

if your keywords are not targeted by anybody you will rank without a single backlink... and possibly without content, too. It all comes down to analyzing your competition, see what kind of domains rank in the top 5 spots for your target keyword, see what kind of content they have (for example, if you're in the ecom niche you will notice that more often than not the websites ranking on the 1st page of google for any ecom-related keyword have a whooping ZERO content, only images, prices, product features / attributes and "add to cart" button). Google treats different niches, different keywords, and different search intents totally different.

Nowadays, if you want to rank you need to either: throw shit (autoblogs) at google to see what sticks, or do in-depth keyword+niche+competition research to find the weak spots

Yes it can. But you also have to factor in age of the domain, on page etc. Also the dude could be hiding up some pins too.

Definitely authority of your site in that subject is matter too. Not that one like will do the wonder.

Weigh up your costs of the domain, and the possible profits without being foolish, and then yes, if it seems to be worth it (divide the cost over a year)
go for it, as long as your pretty sure they are good links.

Yo. Can you show an example of a autoblog?

I agree with this. you need to be in the ball park of the top 5 sites for your primary keyword, not only in high authority backlinks, but also across on-site optimization tactics. at least that has been my observation.

Yo. Can you show an example of a autoblog?

Now how would I do that without showing you my website? Can't do it, sorry...

But autoblogs are just regular websites, but with content posted by software or through RSS feeds instead of manually. That's all!

You would just show one that you saw on the internet and one that you weren't an owner of. Software generated content? Like spun content or reposted content?

Um, again, how would I know which one is an autoblog if I don't own it? Autoblogs are just normal sites, but with automated content, and sometimes the automated content is good enough to not be able to tell it apart from manual content.

The software I'm using creates 100% unique content, but it's obviously not quality, sometimes it makes no sense, other times it replaces words like Tom Cruise with Tim Cruising, or Tony Ship or abominations like that. But like I said, I simply don't care anymore. If any of these weirdnesses start ranking (I'd assume not sooner than August) I will go back to them and see if I can improve them. If not.... I'll just consider the $300 investment lost on betting (been a rabid better my entire life, and I've lost way more than $300 with this addiction, $300 means nothing even if now I'm poor as fuck lol)

Your website can rank higher without any backlinks. The number of backlinks is depend upon the competitor backlinks. If your competitor have not any backlinks then your website can rank without backlinks if you have good website.

It is also true that 1 good backlink is better than 100 backlinks from low quality website. If your competitor have 100 backlinks of low quality and you have only one backlinks from high authority relevant website, you will rank higher than your competitor. You should identify competitor backlinks to extract good or bad backlinks

Depends on the difficulty of keywords you choose.
Some needs backlinks and some not.

Its just that my competitors with few backlinks outrank authority sites. And one site with many backlinks and niche specific is nowhere in the SERP. So its really confusing what google is looking for.

i believe that's not a rule of thumb in SEO,
many websites still rank using web 2.0s, gsa links & all kind of different spam (relatively)
one thing i can say for sure, that this depends on the niche, language & keyword(s)
