So, my competitor ranks consistently in top 3 for every kw in the industry.

They beat me because they do have better links. (Im working on it!)
Curiously though they have a big adsense ad in the middle of every page.

why would they do that???
Is it just to earn a few bucks a month?
Or Might google give them a boost because google can earn money from the ads?

Has anyone tested this?

What do you think?

Thanks in advance

No adsense is obviously an ad network

even if both are owned by Google, AdSense has nothing to do with your rankings,
in fact, you could get a drop in ranking if you put too many ads, which will slow down the websites/pages & cause an increase in bounce rate, time spent, etc...

Of course not. The opposite happens.
When you place AdSense ads, your page will take longer to load... So it's going to damage a little your SEO (UX), will not help at all!

Thank you. Just wanted to explore this. I appreciate you feedback

Quite the opposite IME. Adsense is the slowest component in a website and drags your speed grade much lower .

The answer is yes. Adsense MAY HELP you to rank more.

It sounds crazy I know.

I read a Google patent last month in which they clearly stated that the amount of advertising traffic delivered to an advertiser is a ranking factor. In the patent, Amazon is used as an example but we all know that they can't ignore their own ad network.

It's even more important with the introduction of 'rel sponsored' tag.

The Google patent is set to expire in 2024.

So, there you have it. The amount of clicks to advertisers on your site is a ranking factor.

Wow.

so please clarify.

Since traffic helps...
does it help my competitor hosting the ads...
or the websites he is advertising with adsense that are getting the traffic?

Thx

If anything, adsense makes you rank worse because it can really slow websites down.

In that implementation of the algorithm, they are referring to the website showing the advert. So, more clicks on adsense ads is equals to more rankings.

EDIT: That's why the Daily Mail lawsuit against Google is valid if they have the right documents.

So it makes sense to test this,
Despite it slowing the website down.

I guess we wont know until we test.
Other wise its just conjecture.
Thanks!
