Marriage takes love to start it, and preserve it..Love is of 3 types...eros which is just sexual attraction. Thats enough to shack up with a prostitute or gigolo or just anyone on the street -one night stands and all that. That does not last as you can shack up with the next sexually arousing person.
Next is phileo, the bond of friendship.This goes a long way, as long as the friendship lasts...but friends who dont keep putting in the effort to keep the friendship warm, can drift apart and the marriage breaks...this is what I think happened to this couple and most couples who last several years It can happen at even 50 years of marriage..
The last one that bulletproofs a marriage is the selfless God kind of love called Agapao. Here both parties are willing to sacrifice everything to make the other happy, even their own comforts and benefits. This type of marriage is very rare. Its the only bulletproof one, as both members keep on sacrificing for each other making themselves love each other more...the love actually keeps growing as the years go by....for this type, you cant fake it..if you dont have that nature, you cant fake it..a few months or years and you will wear out faking it and the true selfish human nature will manifest. You either have it or you don't. If you have it, the harder part is to find someone else like you who also has it. That's when you can be sure your marriage will be for life.
So phileos can stay for life even if they are not so fulfilled, as long as both parties continue to put in the work. Once one party gives up, its over.
Agapaos on the other hand, never give up. They keep at it, and so it works, always works and always will work.
