A lot of people starting their e-commerce or dropshipping products get obsessed with finding the “winning product”. However, this research often ends up being a huge waste of money.

https://twitter.com/kobegatsby/status/1384280819988975621, you don’t need to kiss many frogs before finding the 6 figures product.

You should not start with products. Instead, identify a common emotion, determine how it manifests itself in the economy, and capitalize on it.

The steps are simple:

  • Find a desire, feeling, or problem that a group of people is spending money to solve.
  • Learn about that desire and the group of people who have it.
  • Find companies who are solving that exact same desire with their products.
  • Sell the exact same product, an accessory to it, or a completely different product that solves the same problem.
The example KOBE makes is about people’s current need to feel safe:

“According to the widely cited Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting consulting firm, total firearm sales in August 2020 alone exceeded sales for the entirety of 2019.”

2020 has not been a pleasant year, and many people have felt unsafe. So, what exactly did they do?

They went out and bought guns. But this doesn’t mean you should begin dropshipping AK-47s. It’s just a starting point.

When people feel insecure, they don’t manifest this sentiment just by buying guns. There are other products to solve this problem.

Start researching tools and search for related keywords: home security, security, safety. You’ll start finding all the products people are buying to satisfy this need.

And you’ll find businesses banking on these emotions. In this case, KOBE found different ones:

She’s Birdie, Guardian Torch, Haven, and The Stringer Tools.

If there are big businesses built around this problem, it means people are spending. And, there’s the chance to make some bread.

I used to have a site that I built on the back of a brand name not having their own .com address. So I just put amazon affiliate on it, and linked to their products, like an ecommere site.
It only made at most $10 bucks a month, and I stopped renewal, thinking it wasn't much, (one of my first websites). Should have kept it really, could have maybe double triple it up, as it was quite niche, but consistent buyers.

Might be a dumb question but hey, I'll ask. How would you go about finding these desires and problems?

Makes a lot of sense. Better to always put yourself on the shoes of the buyer to understand how strong is the desire to purchase the item you plan on selling.

Totally agree with you. But you guys should keep in mind it can be a huge gamble to come up with a new product. You never know how the market is going to take it. You need the right product, at the right time, for the right audience and you have to market it in the right way.

What I would recommend is: Do a combination of both.

Find a winning product and make it even better or transform it into a product that will solve other (or more) problems. Example: There is this "posture correcting" product to get an upright upper body. Now be creative and come up with a product to fix another posture...maybe for the neck? cuz many people starring on their phone for x hours per day like some monkeys? :(

Absolutely!

The good thing is people have already done the work for you so no need to reinvent the wheel just need to bring a better version of the product

You just joined last week and you already know @Mr Positive wow
Someone feeling jealous? also I don’t do drop shipping at least for now, if I remember someone did offer me a review copy about something similar but I declined as I don’t do it, can’t remember what exactly it was. Also in my jou so far I have realised what works for others may not work for me, and hence instead of seeing the top figures I spent time studying the next niche but if I did dropshipping then these would be brilliant tips

It's also because "winning product" is a term very efficient to sell courses to newbies.

It's easier to tell someone he didn't make money because he didn't have the good product, instead of the fact that he lacks marketing skills.
