People used to like namecheap because it's cheap and convenient. Although it is no longer cheap (better prices elsewhere) and has been more of a hassle than any other registrar I've used (including Godaddy).
1. Of the dozens of registrars I've used, Namecheap is the only registrar that sometimes sends seemingly arbitrary emails, seemingly at random times much before your domain renewal, where you have to "validate" your email associated to that domain. Failure to do this results in Namecheap seizing and re-selling your domain (keep in mind this is before its renewal is due; during your already paid for term). I've actually lost one of my most powerful expired domains this way, because the registrar account had an email I don't check very often.
2. Namecheap now requires activation email links to be clicked every time you login, before you can login to your account. To make matters worse, their broken security system continually has me having to talk with their customer support because the activation emails don't go through (despite repeated "resend activation emails"), to which I'm always told that my email address was (permanently) blocked by their system for not being able to receive mail (at some point in time). In other words, if any of their emails do not get through for whatever reason, they'll just block all outbound emails to your email.
If it wasn't for the fact that it's a hassle to move everything, I probably would have moved everything to name.com or some other reputable company. I think this registrar is being propped up and recommended off what it used to be along with having mass adoption.
