Worked in IT before I was even born, but you thought of a USB stick as an option before local file sharing.

Imagining the cloud as quite insecure? First, the files are encrypted, not sure if you know how encryption works but it's pretty damn secure, then you have the monopolies running it, and the amount of clients they will lose if they show any signs of security issues is phenomenal, they more than likely go through their patching cycles faster than you can update windows 10 with auto-patching software, they have extremely good redundancy with server replication happening across regions.

Not sure what you've worked as before I was born, but confirmed that it wasn't an "IT engineer"

That being said, to offer some useful advice, if you was to go to the cloud for whatever reason, go with Microsoft, Microsoft and AWS are the main contenders in the cloud sector. Google are secure but I'd always choose the bigger fish in the ocean for security.

Tons of companies are migrating their on-prem environments to Azure/AWS at the moment, so they've managed to gain the trust of IT companies for managing their infrastructure. That's a green flag in my eyes. Migrating entire infrastructures to the cloud is not something companies decide to do lightly, they need clear evidence it's secure.

If you choose the cloud route (I prefer the local network) be sure to always backup your data on a drive you have access to.
Thinking the cloud is 100% secure is a mistake, look t what happened with ovh recently. It could happen to amazon or Google too. The cloud is only someone else's computer .

For sure. I’m a bit weary about cloud. Even one of the biggest IT companies had a huge cloud breach a few years ago when I worked there. It could have cost them millions upon millions in damage.

Since then I’ve been trying to avoid it as much as I can. At least for the most delicate data.

Maybe I need to re-think my view of these cloud services. I always imagined they were quite insecure.

If you're that worried about security, why not set up a home server with ownCloud or something similar
