From a SEO point of view, is it better for ranking to have multiple small specialized sites with a few powerful custom niche relevant backlinks or one big site that covers the whole niche with many, more general backlinks?

I would personally go with the smaller more targeted site. I would still only start with 1 though, so you can focus resources on it. Then once it's starting to generate income, move on to the next one. My reasons behind this are that its easier to rank a niche site - less resources required, less competition and also that you are spreading your risk when you have multiple smaller websites.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Spreading it out over multiple smaller sites makes it easier to scale and I don't have all my eggs in one basket incase there is an algo update and a site takes a hit.

One big site focused on a micro-niche
Time is a big factor here.
If you can train a VA to outsource much of the tasks, you'll have more time to try and build the next one.

a single site will help you to save much for links,
interlinking & website authority can really help on ranking and you can spend less with every new page,
also, that will cut all the costs for multiple domains, website setups, themes, plugins, configs, design, logo, speed optimization, etc...

ofc, if all of the targeted keywords are on the same niche

I'd go for an authority site - inch wide, miles deep

Better long term investment of your time, focus, and money

Shortcut: reverse engineer your competitors

Find their low difficulty keywords - dominate those then scale up

If it's the same niche then one big site with more content, more external backlinks, more and properly made internal backlinks as well.

I suggest you for multipal niche sites, you can do your dffrent diffrent SEO experiments also on that

one big site

I'd go with both a big site but also a couple of smaller sites.

If you get hit hard by Google, then your big site can kill you off.

This went from HUGE traffic until it got killed in December.

How many sites in do you think it'd take to start hiring a team to run each site while you make new ones?

Have a massive site in multiple niches, was going to start crafting smaller ones to backlink

One big site for sure because if the site it's big, you have more DA (Domain Authority) and this matters when you are trying to rank certain keywords. Start with low-competition ones tho'.

A bit off-topic, but out of curiosity. How could a high traffic site like this get killed off by an algo update and never recover? Where there some BH elements involved and it was "a matter of time"? Or it truly came unexpected?

improve your ranking, Definitely niche-based authority backlinks will help you well.
