Over the past few months. I've been focusing on keyword research a lot. I've done it for a few years now, and one thing I'm seeing a lot more commonly, is low strength sites outranking more powerful sites. I mean this isn't a surprise with topical authority right?

But the gap between low strength sites and high strength sites is becoming greater and greater.

And last week, finally baffled me.

I saw a keyword, 8k search volume, 60 difficulty in Ahrefs. (Which of course indicates strong sites)

The top 10 SERPS were all 60+ DR, except for one site in 3rd position. 0 DR, 8 UR.

What was more interesting, this site in question wasn't even targeting the 8k volume keyword. It was just a H2 in his big article. Meanwhile the authority sites were targeting this keyword in their H1.

So we already know topical authority exists but that wasn't why he was ranking. Want to know how I know? His site only had 16k words, and the article in question was 7k words. Yep... he had 3 articles on his site. Not related to eachover.

So then I started to think "Wtf?" only one mention of this topic, on a relatively new site, with barely any backlinks? How the fook is he ranking 3rd for a keyword like that, and ahrefs estimated his articles was getting 6k traffic from that article.

I began my quest. Looking at newer tools such as keyword cupid, to reading case studies on semantic search.

It finally clicked.

Topical Depth. And by depth, I mean he's covered more than his competitors combined on the topic, he's using unique headings with unique RELEVANT words, by unique I mean his competitors are not using them and by relevant I mean it's relevant to the niche.

E.G for cars, the word "engine" in the RIGHT CONTEXT is relevant to an article on cars, and if your competitors are not using the word "engine" in their article, and you manage to fit it in with good context, then that's a brownie point from google. Keep doing this in your article, and you basically have a new article with unseen information that's relevant.

Google want's to display this. Googles aim is not to display repeated information for the top 10 SERPS, nor will it ever be. It wants diversity.

His headings are also related to each over in the eyes of google (Yes there are ways to identify this)

It's basically an article on steroids to google. And google is rewarding this article heavily.

I probably haven't explain this too well, as my own brain is a maze in itself. But I've been seeing this behaviour the last few months more and more. And I've usually just passed it off as topical authority, until this article where topical authority no longer applies.

Rankbrain + BERT are a force to be reckoned with. And in 2021, it's more important than ever to understand them both as much as possible to get ahead. You won't be able to reverse engineer them, but you will get an advantage my understanding them, the more the better.

This is T-SNE. Using higher dimensional data points to form clusters of information. I believe this applies site wide (topical authority) and page specific as in content/images/links bla bla bla.

And this, is how BERT works. (Not googles BERT, just general BERT)

As you can see this is 2021, this is what is happening already, these are the algorithms being used. It's complex.

So is keyword research dead? No, it can come in handy especially for search vol and traffic estimates, but the difficulty score is becoming less and less relevant.

Does this mean backlinks are dead? No, not yet. Probably not for the foreseeable future. But I anticipate they will keep getting weaker. As googles aim isn't to use backlinks to discover good content, it's aim is to use it's own algorithm to decipher which content/sites users will most likely want to be.

Conclusion? Content is becoming stronger and stronger, year after year, and understanding topics rather than keywords is becoming incredibly important. I could be wrong on everything I have said here, literally. But that's my take on my past few months studying big SEOs, case studies, new tools and my own manual research.

Let me know your thoughts. I like eyes from a different angle at all times.

Id agree with most of that however I think google is past BERT.

I treat google like the military. Any new plane or tech they showcase in the media is OK to do as they are already surpassing that tech.

When google starts telling you this is how they are doing stuff in my opinion they are just telling you that's what we been doing and are now focusing on something else.

I think you're right in most of your opinions. I see this kind of behavior often, actually it's hard not find a site with low DA among the bog boys, so something like content depth factor is true. On the other hand, that site might also be using good PBN links.

You could be onto something. While I've been working on my blog, targeting low competition keywords, I've noticed most of the blogs in the search results parrot the same things. Some are almost copies of each other like someone would have looked at their competitor and done a little copy-paste. ;)

So I guess what you're seeing is someone providing something new to that. Might be hitting the same keywords, but bringing something new to the mix.

That's what I try to do with my test project. I've been reading a lot since I started my online hobby again and that would be the way I understand google wants to provide more value to the users. So far I've had 4-6 keywords hit the number 1 spot, with the lowest of the low traffic, but something in my content must be raising them up right?

Still, I'm just a beginner.

Guys forget DA please its a bullshit metric designed by tools to give a visual representation of the stats / info they are providing. DA is all bullshit.

Google definitely still uses BERT, it fits perfectly with their values, and making BERT public only helped google, because it gave SEO's a bigger push towards writing more in-depth / more relevant content.

However I agree that they have new tech, whether that new tech is aimed at content who knows... sometimes they target other aspects of SEO with their big updates. it's been 3 years since the BERT update if I'm correct, 2018 august I think it was, so it's plausible there's new tech, but I don't think anything will replace BERT or T-SNE for a long time. It will most likely layer on top of it as a complimentary tech. I truly believe BERT is going to be at the core for a hell of a long time.

I did take possible hidden PBNs into account, but it just didn't add up. The guy had 0 DR, outranking 60-70-80 DR sites targeting that keyword. We are talking big big authority sites here with 1000s of good backlinks. And the guy had 16k content.

I doubt he would have spent that much on PBN's and only published 16k content. It wouldn't be cost efficient.

Also he wasn't even targeting the keyword, it was in a H2, this is a strong signal that the algorithm has massively favoured this. And the only difference in content is the depth/relevancy.

Yes exactly, and someone who spouts new relevant information, well they clearly know the niche to be able to do that, so it aligns with the "expertise" factor. If I don't know a niche, and I write an article, I'm just having to regurgitate information from other articles. Someone who is an expert can provide new content.

Agreed, I use DR, it has shown to have strong correlations with rankings repeatedly, not because it's a factor, but because it does a decent job at representing backlinks. So it's good to use it for scanning sites with lots of backlinks quickly. Surprisingly good for scraping/sorting too.

I agree I think BERT is maybe a % of what they use but I don't think its a larger factor as it once was. They got smarter at reading content and figuring out whats going where. I'm noticing this with our own product pages, as you are noticing it with the example you posted.

Yeah, I was thinking that the search results would get quite stagnant so the direction Google seems to be going seems smart in a way. Otherwise, it would be just guys writing longer and longer articles about the same things over and over again which they seem to want to move away from.

I mean if I was a search engine *cough* I'd like to have people trying to write as fresh content as possible, all the time.

I definitely agree with you. What is also important in my opinion, is focusing on representation of data. Every good text should include some bullet lists or tabels.

Google already has T5 which seems to be vastly superior than BERT.

Other than that good observations but i think you may be thinking too deep here.

First of all DA and DR are shit and although the algorithm seems to be getting better at content interpretation its still very, very, very far from "smart".

Just my 2 cents.

No.

That's putting that in for bullet point and table sake. Which is the exact opposite of what you should be doing.

If you wrote a murder mystery would it have a bloody table and bullet points?

niiiiice! This gives me hopes.... and ideas :)

Also, this...

So, if any tool to measure progress is shit...what are people supposed to use to gauge the effectiveness of the work they put in? Traffic? If its shit...then why do mostly and only high DR sites rank...im just curious how you go about measuring the progress of sites..

So....I think its possible that you are seeing a local or "variant" result thrown in...its possibly not consistent across the world...we could all check but then we would see it...and that would be a big nono...you know they cell toss the results for small shitty people's sites that they don't give a fuck about...and the real SERP anchors never move..aka the giant sites with high DR scores...

I measure the progress by throwing everything to the wall and checking which one sticks :D

1. Yes tools are becoming less and less effective,
2. That's the point of this article, high DR sites are starting to be taken over by much lower DR sites more often, this is a signal that things are changing. However as I mentioned, backlinks currently are still a decent slice of the pie. So it's not like high DR sites will vanish, backlinks still have their place at the moment, but they are becoming weaker as Google's content game get's stronger.

I get the whole point of this article is to tell you, content can now beat authority sites backlinks, IF you do it right. By this I don't just mean satisfying users with content, I mean giving the algorithm what it wants. New unique information that's a lot more in-depth on a topic and there all the headings are in the right order, with the headings that google wants you to use (not what seems best from your view)

This will also be shifting the traditional "hire a writer" where you could just hire anyone for a lot of money and rank with some SEO touches, instead.. as an SEO you will need to outline the content according to what google requires and find a writer that legitimately knows your niche to make it in-depth and unique.

You see mate, I'm not even aware of T5, but quick scanning shows it scores just below human baseline, that's fricking impressing. I've got to learn more about T5 now.

And I don't think the algorithm is "smart" per say, I think it can read context very well, but it can't connect semantics like a human can. Therefor it's open to manipulation.

E.G your competitor could have someone trained in the niche, and be an expert, and you could outrank them with worse content simply because you used googles version of relevancy rather than a humans version of relevancy.

A good analogy from someone I was listening to was, googles ability to connect relevant information in clusters is at a baby stage, in comparison to the human life cycle. So even though humans can understand the connections, google won't be able to understand them like us. This is leading to techniques to manipulate, and I've found one already. Although it sadly doesn't apply to the more specific topics. Which is anticipated, as specific topics are much harder to connect the dots for google than broader topics due to less data from less searches.

Really good analysis. I agree with lots of things you have said here.

Thanks mate, a lot of this forum seem to be behind in SEO, as in they are using practices which are becoming redundant. And we are seeing more and more weak sites milking their advantage and rankings for thousands and thousands of keywords with small amounts of content. And we are seeing bigger sites lose more and more traffic and ask if they have been penalised or asking what they are doing wrong.

When your thinking of a good example about in-depth relevant, unique content, your best examples will be SEO sites. Ahrefs blog posts are a prime example, they figured out where google was heading a while ago. They are ahead of the game. That doesn't surprise me though, they have the money for the big guns in SEO to keep ahead of the game.

And there's more to those blog posts than just long form content, they've really nailed the SEO technicalities of that content.

Great. It gives an all-new perspective for me.

Also very much agree on the fact that the content is becoming more and more important and backlinks importance is weakening.

That's a very contradictory statement but is that the case with all the niches out there?
