Link in the description is crawlable so yes, it does.
Popularity as in view count, does not matter for organic search but it does for YouTube. But then again, popular videos attract links to themselves so it's preferable to unpopular one.

If the links drive in the clicks, then YES.
If no one clicks on ur links, NO.
If no one clicks on ur links, NO.
In my opinion and experience it does help
I worked for someone and he always made video and opened youtube channel
and also put it in the home page of couse he also put link in youtube description

- Get some CTR clicks and high retention views
- Send some backlinks to the YouTube video (1500 Social share & bookmarks for example)
- Watch the page you have in description start to rank in Google

Google consider nofollow links with less to no value and use for ranking only for a while already (I think since 2020 may update), that's what they state at least
didn't try anything with that personally, but you can always test it out if you're not tight on budget
otherwise, don't go for it as it will be a waste most probably

no difference whether the video is popular or not, it still consired the same in SEO, as far as I know.
and yes backlink from youtube is nofollow type.
