Ok I will look into this more. I'm testing a few key word strings with PPC to see which ones are work targeting with SEO.

You can use the 'score' as the base, but yes you have to analyse yourself. Take a look at first page results, open them. Is the content generally long, or everyone is ranking with just 400-500 word posts. If latter is the case, you can try producing a high quality long form content to outrank them.
However, you have to look at the domains as well. Are they established, authority domains with a ton of backlinks? Then content alone won't be enough. I usually like to open them in competition checker one by one (now I use Keysearch, so I get all metrics provided at once).

Easy to outrank: forums, sites without backlinks, serp results that are not on topic (it can happen that keyword is so specific only first 2-3 result will be 100% on topic, and others are related only)

You should be building at least a couple of projects every year, (say every 6 months) if you are starting of, to get a feel for things, and realise that it can take years, as many people are already far ahead of you in terms of setup, and ranking age.

I see. That's the thing most highly ranked sites are way ahead of what I am capable of producing, but I will get started to see where I stand. Thanks for the insight!

Keyword difficulty is not the only concern as far as ranking is concerned. There are various other factors, most important is to find out who you are competiting with and then check for what they are doing to get ranked for the keyword.

I don't there's anyone or tool that can accurately predict how long it'll take to rank a site/page for a keyword. Sometimes keywords with low difficulty on ahrefs(this is what I use) ranks in a matter of hours. I've experienced this a few times. Othet times they take months.
Another interesting thing is, some ranks page 1 in a matter of hours say 10hrs or so, some days.. But after a few more days or weeks, they start to lose position.

That's interesting. So fast results are possible (but unlikely I'm assuming) That's interesting indeed, I realise the google algorithms are changing frequently maybe that's the reason? Or competitors react quickly with new content/backlinks to combat position loss.

Yes, "Show me your enemies and I'll tell you how you are". Check how strong are the top 10 pages. Check the overall search volume on trends.google.com and pick higher and higher volume keywords as your site's authority grows. If your site is young, no point in writing a 10k words long article targeting a super competitive keyword, spending thousands on link building and hope to get into top3.
