First off, I am terrible at these kinds of write-ups, but I'll try my best on this Saturday evening in a country where we get a fine if we leave the house after 21:00.

I am making this thread to hold myself accountable of a goal I have been having for ages, but never started working on. I also hope this thread will motivate others to start working out, as it has way more positive aspects other than the physical part. In fact, if I never started working out I most likely would've been the old desperate dude with zero confidence who would've ended up in a cubicle for the rest of his life.

My goal I am talking about, is pull ups (weighted ones in general) - which I completely suck at after 4+ years of lifting.

You might think: "pull ups are so easy, I can do many of them and I barely lift.".

This is not the case for me. I am 6'6 (~198cm), with a crazy ass wingspan, which makes pull ups extremely difficult because of the long range of motion. Next to that, I am currently 92kg after cutting down to about 13% body fat, which gives me about 10-12kg more bodyweight than if I would've been shorter. My guess that I can only do one or two with strict form currently, but the first training will show if that's the case.

It means that starting out will be harder, but it doesn't mean that 20kg weighted pull ups are not possible. I've gone through so many physical changes from almost being anorexic to the image above, that I know I can actually do this. (No, I am by far not huge, but I am extremely proud from where I came from - gained almost 40kg of mass on body and long ass limbs in 4-5 years.)

I will be running my good old legs pull push split, six days in a row with a rest day on Saturday. Volume is currently not high, as we came out of a three month lockdown last week. I will update my programs and volume when the weeks go by.

First I'll have to see how regular pull ups go. If they're too difficult, I'll start out doing negatives, dead hangs, etc.

Also, the push day looks pretty lame with only doing push-ups and banded flies for chest, but faith decided to give me scoliosis, so my left shoulder is in a kind of fucked up position - this is the best way around it though, and I am not complaining :)

I will make an update probably twice every week after my pull day.

Hopefully I can motivate others to start a similar goal - we are all in this together :)

If anyone else is interested in starting with working out, I highly recommend checking out the website and YouTube channel of Renaissance Periodization.

Good luck with it!

I was once into weight training and took it very seriously, I was taking* all sorts (not steroids or anything though) and got pretty big. And then I got married. My six pack turned into a 40 pack unfortunately.

Thanks alot! :)

I personally can do Weighted Pullups for 8 reps with 15 kg attached.

No Doubt I am 5'8 weighing 55 Kg with 8-10% (Don't know exactly) Bodyfat so yeah :D !
Great stuff nevertheless!

You might not be huge but you are pretty big already haha. Really, at that height, you look pretty decent, really. Now that you had the success you had, I am pretty sure you will achieve your goals soon. I'm interested, are you following a special diet in the meantime?

Thanks a lot. Many people I know in real life tell me I became very big, but I do not see it myself (people really become blind and just want to get bigger)

For putting on over 40kg, mainly being in a caloric surplus for 4 years straight was the most important factor.

Next to that, inside your surplus, have sufficient protein and add some veggies and fruits for the HeAlTh.

And just train hard :)

I love pull-ups :D good luck with your journey!
Thank you! Hopefully they'll get easier relatively quick, so I can say the same thing :)

Don't let anyone ever tell you that spreadsheets don't build muscles! :D

Best of luck bud.

I have a similar journey for squats, push ups and crunches. I am a newbie with high fat% and started with kneed-push ups instead of normal ones.

How are you training for the pull ups? What are you doing for that?

Starting my first pull day tomorrow. If I manage to do atleast 3 strict reps I'll do multiple sets of 2-3 reps and go from there. If I barely get two, I will start out with negatives, static holds, and dead hangs.

Thanks everyone, feel free to share your own goals here too.

Yeah I was going to suggest static holds and just hanging with your desired weight as well and try and beat that time every day.

Other good one is to stand on a platform and then pull your self up on that so you end up on tip toes. It gets you used to that range of movement.

One good thing I was shown when I couldn't do 0 (again similar to you im really broad / wide) was to lie down on the floor chair either side of me with a barbell resting on them and I had to just pull myself up off the floor - it got my grip and chest used to that movement. I done that for a week or two and I managed to do a 1 pull up first try day one of having a go at the "real" thing.

I did the last thing you named during the lockdown in a playground, they're really good and were part of my preperation on this journey. Australian pull ups they're called, amazing movement for the whole back :)
