I was talking to an SEO agency who said that they have "membership to authority site for quality backlinks"
What does that mean?
I assume its paid back links to sites with good DA?
Do these tend to be expensive?
How much would a contextual backlink to DA 40 site in your niche be worth?

Most likely, what they mean is.

They have relationships with the sites, where the sites will let them pay money for a backlink, and the SEO agency just put money on top. A lot of people who sell guest posts here do the same thing.

I.E I can contact a website asking for a backlink, this website will say "Sure $40" and then I come onto BHW and say "$120 for this backlink"

That's how simple some guest posting services work on here.

If you are looking for paid backlinks, my best advice to you, and I seriously mean this, is contact the owners of the site yourself. They will reply, and they will most likely charge you for content, but it's going to be a lot cheaper than anyone you buy off.

But my other advice to you is, you seem to think DA is worth a price. Do not buy backlinks with your current knowledge, you will throw your money away buying it based on DA, that's not how you look for quality in backlinks by any means. It's literally throwing money into a fire.

Thanks for the advice. Thats really helpful.

Adside from checking that a link is contextual and in your niche along as a decent DA what other
ways are there of making sure a link would give an SEO bosot?

Traffic that a site gets, and looking if only less than 10% of their posts contain a sold link. If many posts contain links with anchors like 'web design company melbourne' you know it's trash and spammed.

There is quite a lot, but also there's a lot to make sure that link doesn't bring down your site and get it de-indexed.

The last thing you want is to pay $1000s for links over the course of a year and they eventually take down your site, and your $1000s in the red.

My advice to you is study SEO, until you can answer those questions yourself. Remember, money is not something to play with unless you have lots of it.

I'm going to keep this information away from you on the criteria for a backlink, because I feel like your going to pull the trigger on it. And I really don't want you to lose money man. I burned through so much doing the same stuff myself, I ended up starting a new website and being in the red.

My last note on this is, a lot of services will not give you what they say, you need to find which service will work for you based on what they offer and what you need for your site. If you see a service offering "get top ranks in google" avoid it like the plague, because there is no way on this planet anyone can guarantee top ranks from their backlinks.
