I use the free version of HitFilm Express. Lots of customization if you want to create transitions etc. I would post a link to the site but I'm not that clued up on the rules.

There's some open-source software, but I don't think they're good. I recommend using a crack version of Camtasia or Filmora, just scan them with virustotal before using. they're good for beginners.

Lot's of free transition packs on youtube as well. Basically, just drag and drop.

Davinci Resolve is a pretty solid alternative. And its free.

If you want to look it better and fancier look for Sony Vegas.

No difference, it's just a newer version.
It doesn't matter, 8, 9, 10... All are simple to use and will finish the job.
