I'm checking backlinks of a competitor site (coupon/deal related), and they seem to have roughly 9000 backlinks, where most are coming from obviously spam coupon sites. I decided to run whois on a couple of them (all 0 DA, etc) and they've been created in the last year by the same person.

What is the purpose of this? The competitor is using a subdomain as a parasite on a very reputable domain, so does that mean someone is just throwing a LOT of links at it? I didn't think that would work just because the DA of these sites is terrible?

It may look like relevant backlinks, but it won't help them in the long run. Sure, some google update will hit them.

What about established coupon code websites like mydealz.de? Are those backlinks counting? One of the biggest ecommerce players in the according industry of my country is having a lot of backlinks on ahrefs with bigger coupon code websites.

i found this too! 80% links of my competitors are from site like couponcode, promocode. even hundreds of these links per month. But they do have a good ranking. How did they get these and I don't think it is helpful to seo, right?

Wondering this too. There must be a single place you can submit and everyone else is scraping/using that database, surely? Anyone know what it is?
but these links will get removed after one month. Still don't get why they are doing it...lol

Yes, many of my competitor’s e-commerce sites have a lot of backlinks from coupon sites

Not sure about the value of links

My competitors also have such kind of backlink profile, and their domain has high DA/DR ( about 60 or more ) in ahrefs, semrush or Moz, and they rank well.
Their purpose is for sure to increase their website authority.
I think the spam domains seems useless, but the competitors also do backlinks to those spam domains and then the final domain's authority is so high.

I know that if I need to create quality backlinks, I can beat them, but it seems somehow impossible. :(

There is no real downside - no penalties from these links or you could just submit your competitor and tank them. The links might be worthless, but it's 10x harder to go through SEMRush for competitor backlinks when they have 1000s of these annoying coupon links. It makes it easier to hide good/real/PBN links from competitors, that's already an advantage. I almost want the links because it throws off my competitors studying my backlink profiles.
