I used that website. It says my #1 competitor got 72 backlinks.
Is that easy to defeat?
I'm completely new to SEO and I want to start a webshop that is focussed around a couple products.

it depends how relevant that site is, it's age etc. You can use either market samurai or traffic travis to weigh up all the factors. I'm guessing that the site would not be that hard to beat.

You can use the SEOBook toolbar, it will show you the yahoo backlinks for a site you are currently on, and you can install the SEO4Firefox add on (obviously, for firefox) that you can have it show you the backlinks when you look up something in google. - you can customize it to only show specific data you want.. so just backlinks/pr, etc that you want, and "hide" the other stuff.
DO NOT surf around with both of those turned on, it pulls a lot of data, just turn them on when you want the info, then turn them off.

Yes. Google Analytics. It shows exactly how much traffic comes in, the city that the user is from, who the search engine or reffering website that sent the traffic etc. Analytic does much more. It is a must have and it is free. My personal belief is google indexes your pages faster and ranks them better if you are using google analitics. I put it on all my sites.

I use the Quirk SearchStatus Firefox plugin to check backlinks. It'll also show you whois, keyword density, indexed pages, etc.

Remember no one back linker checker will be 100% correct, so good to use a couple together to get a better idea.
