I bought a 2 dollor lotery ticket

yes which will take a quarter or about half. uncle sam wants his paycheck
Land of the free with many advantages.. but taxing your fortune to these extents! Well, to be fair, I'm from Germany so I should know the painful truth about taxes. At least lottery wins aren't taxed here...

Do you have to pay taxes on lottery "earnings" / wins in your country (presumably USA)?

Yes.

This particular lottery was 970 Million in the form of an annuity. If you take the lump sum it would be 750 million or so before taxes and probably 400 - 450 million after taxes.

Still not a bad deal for the 3.00 cost of a ticket though if you were the lucky one who defied the 1 in 300 million chance to win.

Lottery here is 970 Million USD.

I'll have to buy a ticket so I can end up getting half, giving a bunch to children and grandchildren, see my wife buy another new car and leave me with enough for a ham sandwich and a cold beer.

Seems like a good deal for the 3.00 cost of a ticket to me.
