If you want the easiest software to achieve this then Videoscribe and doodly.
This can be done in after effects too.

than it is worth your time to learn how to use a real video editing tool. i generally suck at these things. ;-) XD

He is definitely using Videoscribe or doodly. most probably videoscribe.
These are very easy to use Softwares. I use doodly on one of my channels.
But if you want to use custom images in animation then having some illustrator knowledge is a advantage. you can learn the illustrator stuff needed for this within a hour.

If you're purchasing doodly. there is a onetime price make sure you buy it for onetime price. its 60$ or something.
Videoscribe is also paid i don't know if there is a free version. even if there is that should be very limited.
