How do you track hourly work for a freelance ?

Hello, if you have someone working for you as a freelance for an hourly rate, how do you track he did his work ?
I want to hire a programmer at a hourly rate but I don't know how to do it. I heard that Upwork had something to track the freelancer working. Someone has experience in that ?

On tasks you know nothing about, just study the market and pay per project, someone working on the hour can always fake their working hours, you need the job done, you have to know what you're spending on it.

Upwork has a tool that the freelancer has to install that takes snapshots of the screen ever so often, to keep track of the progress made.

Usually on project based payment, people tend to take their time. The job is done but it could take 2 weeks for a 2 days job for exemple.

I see it as the other way around. On project based payments, the sooner you finish, the faster you get paid. On hourly basis, the longer it takes the more money you make..

Don't hire freelancers by the hour. Hire them by the job. If you don't know what the job is worth maybe you shouldn't be hiring it out.

Agree on that, hourly payment on dev is such a bad practice due to the fact that 'If i delay this 1 hr work to 10 hrs that means 10x profit'

Use Upwork , they have their tracking system with screenshots and log to tracking the freelancer.

If you believe in your freelancer , can use clockify to calculate the hours instead

Webwork is also a great tool. I recently hired a colleague to help me with designs and content. Got Webwork and I'll be using it in the future as well.

Even though many freelancers work with this Upwork tracker, as a freelancer I can tell such program feels intrusive and brings unnecessary stress.
If I were you OP I'd just estimate the max. amount you would be willing to pay + set a deadline.
This way you can also split the global payment between each revision, for example.
