Updating 'last_updated' on WordPress posts

I see on many affiliate sites that their 'last updated' is always within the last couple of days, while they have thousands of posts.
It looks like they are just throwing a query in every few days that does this, without actually changing content.

Is this of any use for rankings, if you don't actually add fresh content?

Are you sure mate? I’ve seen tech troubleshooting and programming tutorials from like 2011 ranking for high comp/voulme kws. Totally obsolete, practically irrelevant and still on the first page?

I sometimes, do very minor updates but not very sure what benefits it brings to rankings.
The reason I do it... is because google shows 'last modified' date in search results and I don't want searchers to think that my content is outdated.
Would be interesting to hear from some people who tried and tested it.
