There's a potential update coming on Mon/Tue. It could be quite a big one based on the current signals today and Google typically rolls out their updates on Mondays, where we've seen some unusual activity the weekend before.

If anyone is seeing anything unusual now, or at the start of the upcoming week, this is the place to discuss. :)

Let's see what happens Monday.

Do you expect anything that might be detrimental to black hat or just some regular update ?

Very soon, no one will need to leave Google to find answers to their questions and this is huge loss to webmasters.

Google is just scraping people's articles all in the name of "snippets"!

Btw, fuck them and their updates.

Is it possible this update coinciding with this giant wave of political censorship by big tech is more than a coincidence? If anyone has a site that's "controversial" let us know

I'm also interested in this. Big tech is literally purging everything that doesn't allign with the mainstream beliefs.

All these updates from 2020 and 2021+ aren't really about blackhat or whitehat.

Who knows. I don't find it productive to get into political here-say. The reality is, it makes no difference what any government is doing unless they make a robot empire to enslave you. You always have the power to build your own business and make money. Challenges have, are and always will be a part of business. John D. Rockefeller faced challenges that would make most here cry.

The updates seem to be them utilizing more of bert and machine learning to satisfy user intent, and a large part of that is satisfying user intent within the serps so people don't click.

Yes, it's bad. It's highly unethical. They are essentially just stealing data, displaying it and monetizing it.

We give them permission to steal from us with our schema don't forget. Unless people all decide to start denying Google, there's not much we can do about it :\

I've got some positions where the site was in a featured snippet and I had no schema for it. In fact, funny thing, on that particular page I forgot to add a "meta desc" tag. Good thing was that people really needed to click to get what they wanted.

But it's an example of Google making a snippet without any permissions. I think it happens on a very large scale anyway.

So so, yes.

It's not as black and white as that.

I have a shop and I sell things. You are someone that finds people. I give you permission to come into my shop and take pictures to show to people so they know what's in my shop and you can send them there. Those people that might be interested in my shop, you get to sell bottles of water for their trip. I'm happy, and you're happy.

But you start coming into my shop and you're now taking some of my products, and selling them directly to people. I only gave you permission to come into my shop because we can both benefit.

This is basically the situation with google. It was in the past a win-win, but they're now just outright stealing shit from your shop and selling it directly. Ie, displaying your content and monetizing that content by displaying their ads.

Maybe a correction of Dec update?

Lot of queries I monitor are a total mess.

Could be, yeah. I am noticing in the past 3-5 days some sites are returning to pre-dec rankings.

It is incredibly messy and I definitely don't think the serps are better than pre-dec.

Me 2021 is going to be awesome

Google: are you sure here take a update to kick off your new year

Me: Ah Shit here we go again.

no wonder my client been seeing good rank movements *fingers crossed*

I am also seeing a lot drops on serps on many keywords today

Alright so this might be the reason why my site got to the first place since May update :D
And one of my keywords got featured in the snippet the first time in 2 years.

nothing to report from my side. maybe the update is an emergency MAGA filter due to Jan 20th biden inauguration.

In my niche, December update was a good thing (I actually showed somebody). Some shitty sites were moved down.
