Hi, I am looking to run ads for my ecommerce store.

Its for blue light glasses so the audience is very broad and difficult to narrow down with interests.

Only thing that stands out from my demographics and interests etc are mainly women aged 25-35.

I am thinking it might be better to create a custom audience based on website visitors and then create a lookalike audience from that.

Would love to get some opinions as to whether you would advise starting with interests or lookalike audience in my situation.

I have a video and image ad that i am going to run.

In terms of data on my store i have 1000+ purchases and 40,000 website visits over last year.

I am also just targeting just my own country to start with (as most of my ecomm sales have been from here) which has a small population (5 million people) so i'm not sure if the small audience size will make a difference when deciding on using lookalike audiences or not.

Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Since you already ran the ads and have over a thousand sales, the best is to create a LLA out of those customers and make the LLA as narrow as possible in other to get very good results. if you've also collected customer's emails, you can also upload them and create a LLA from them. Then don't forget to run retargeting ads to customers who have visited your page.
You can do that along-side creating an internet-based ad on a different ad account and start to gather data..

Besides LLA you can test based on interests. Just think about who are the people that are 8+ hours in front of computer. That could be gamers, than target them based on games, pc brands, graphic card brands etc.

It could be forex traders, teachers and students because of remote education. And so on.

i want to split test the ads but there is so much to test in terms of types of creatives, ad copy, audiences i am a bit confused on how best to do it.
i want to start at $5 ads and build it up.
I have a good image and a good video ready to go.
I was thinking of using the same video and same ad copy first and just split testing targeted audience versus LLA.
Then when the best audience is found to test the image and video against this audience.
Then test different ad copies.
Does that sound right?
Or would i be better to start out testing interests first and then testing the winner of the interests against the LLA?
Or would you go even more granular and test LLA from purchases versus LAA from email list etc first?

Could you please send link to website? Because even if you run ads you can have another problem. And that is not getting results. You could think it's problem in ads or copy but actually it could be because of landing page as well.

Maybe it's good to you, but would it be to your buyer persona. Try to personalize ad.

Before doing any testing make your budget for 3 months minimum. Then calculate how much money you could spend per day for each ad. For example $5 per ad per day.

Testing part:
You could even contact your previous buyers and ask them how do they like product, why did they bought it, etc.
Reverse engineer in it. How does buying process looks from buyer perspective. Let's say he bough it. Why he did it besides his needs for product. Is it because of branding, is it copy, image, personalized ad, etc.

I would go that way. Then when you find winner try to see best demographics for that interest and optimize your ad (exclude things that don't give any results). And test it with LLA.
