Dropped domain vs. fresh domain

Happy new year everyone.

I'm looking to buy a domain for a website that I've already created. It's in a niche category which I haven't been able to find a strong dropped domain for. I've been using the expireddomains website. Are there alternatives to this website that I could find stronger domains on? Auction websites, etc.?

Or should I just start with a name that I choose that has no backlinks? What is the difference in cost between these two options?

It's very hard to find quality expired domains in these days. I would go with a fresh one or I would pay more and buy from someone professional (an expired one)
