Why the hell did github change default branch from 'master' to 'main'

I know this happened 6 months ago. But every time I commit something to my codebase - this pisses me off.
All this virtue signaling.

The name comes from a masterpiece, master copy - it has nothing to do with slaves. Even if it was, are we just gonna remove words from dictionaries?

Are they going to rename the "master's degree" to "main" degree?

It's crazy. Same with whitelist/blacklist, now you're meant to use allowlist/blocklist - despite whitelists and blacklists having nothing to do with skin color.
 
Maybe email the support and ask them to change it back just for you, I am sure it's possible and it will save you from being so upset about a word? Failing that maybe some kind of script to actively find and replace the word if it is ever on your screen to avoid a word upsetting you?

Could be a good idea for a software tool to sell here, I can see lots of people in this thread super hurt by a word.

Hello,

OK so I was thinking, you can email the support line and give them a list of all the words that hurt you and ask them to replace them with safe words that do not.

I guess thinking about it, it is not likely they will help but now I am thinking, I see so many of you here so upset by words I could maybe make a browser plugin for the sensitive folk, a super simple 2 feild setup where you list all the words too painful for you to see when you are looking at the internet and simply replace them with your safe words of choice, maybe even a comforting photograph?

I am just brainstorming, I will have a go at coding it and drop an update here when it's done so all you deeply hurt people can again use the internet without fear.

I think with so many delicate people I could release it for free and just make money with it from adverts.

Hope that makes more sense to you :)

I am guessing you are not a developer.
Git was founded in 2005 - for a long long time, developers all around the world have been using the word "master" to identify the most up-to-date/stable copy (branch) of the codebase. Thanks to all the virtue-signaling Github decided to change that default brach to "main".

I am not hurt by the word. I am pissed by the fact that they had to change it.

I don't even see why you two are arguing, You're both pissed at the same thing. Java is pissed because the words been changed and got is pissed because people get offended by words and change them.

You should have released that before Github decided to change the words that hurt the delicate people.
 
Indeed, so many regrets.

If any of you hurt people above would like to send me your trigger words and corresponding safe words I think a repository could be used here.

Not github obvs, not since the incident.
