I created an account a couple of years ago and with mainly being busy with University, used to lurk and read stuff on and off.
It wasn't until this pandemic that allowed me the freedom of time to invest into BHW and now, it has become pretty much my most visited site on a daily basis and not just lurking, but being active as a member as well.
So, what have I learned thus far?
1. Reputation matters A LOT. PERIOD!
Nowadays, forums are mostly an afterthought, if not a dying entity on the Internet. But, I think BHW has implemented a unique system that has lead to not only its popularity but growth as well. Unlike other places, people are rewarded for their activity and reputation as a member.
How often do you read an insightful comment on a thread offering free advice, only to click on the member's signature and see his sales thread? Most of the selling is done through reputation and the more reputable you are, the better chances to secure clients. This gives incentive to members to become "active and better members" and thus, contributes to the growth of the forum.
And don't get me started on the Review Copies! An absolute goldmine for free.. only caveat? be reputable to get one. More Incentives to be "active and better members"!
2. Reputation does not matter AT ALL. PERIOD!
No. I'm not joking!
Another thing I've seen is that your reputation doesn't matter at all if you decide to go against the forum rules. How often have we seen reputable and active members getting banned for either breaking the rules or ending up in the Shitlist. I'm talking about people who've put years into the forum, hundreds of hours into their profiles, thousands of posts, and were certainly paid members with active sales threads as well.
It goes to show that no member can get bigger than the Forums and rules will always prevail.
I guess finding the right balance is really important as a member of BHW! This is probably the only place where I took out time to read the rules and make sure to comply with them.
