Hi All,

I'm English and looking for a book to up my game in the content writing space. This is primarily for my own websites as I like to be a master of all trades.

Are there any books you have come across which really help with writing great content?

Hi Dark Sky, I've never read a single book or guide other than what I've read here on BHW and other popular IM blogs, but for the most part this forum has taught me everything I know. I'm not an expert writer by any means, but I manage to craft decent content for my own website. You're from the UK and I've been living the US now for over 10 years, I am 100% sure that you do not need to read a book to write meaningful content.

I think the biggest thing right now is Search Intent. I'll give you an example that I came up with once I started outsourcing a few articles that I did not want to write myself. I told my writers to not worry about keywords or anything else. Those can be sprinkled in later. What I told them was, imagine that a person is locked in a room. They only have 5 minutes to escape until the room gets filled with water. The only thing they have access to is your article. Your writing must reveal to them the exact method of making a clean escape. If you fail to do so, the person is going to lose their life.

When someone enters in a search query, that's the answer they're looking for. Put yourself in the shoes of the person writing the query, and then start writing. It is all that matters!

Thanks mate, I've been looking at books on amazon and come to the conclusion that there is no magic potion. Most of them are aimed at writing books, which I guess is a completely different field to articles for a blog.

I completely agree with you, it is all about search intent. If it answers the users query straight away and provides additional useful information to keep them reading, its a success.

Thank you! :)

I think it is good to read any books that will expand your vocabulary.

@DeadJoe good approach!

OP good luck in mastering content writing!

Agreed, vocabulary is important to mastering content.

Here's some of the book I recommend :

  • The Adweek Copywriting Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Writing Powerful Advertising and Marketing Copy from One of America's Top Copywriters by Joseph Sugarman
  • How To Make Maximum Money In Minimum Time – by Gary Halbert
  • Ogilvy on Advertising – by David Ogilvy
  • The Boron Letters – by Gary Halbert
  • Advertising Secrets of the Written Word – by Joseph Sugarman

@Dark Sky

if you want to become an expert in writing you have to read a lot and then practice. create a blog and put your written content on it and see if it helps people or not then you can learn the advanced marketing hacks.

Maybe it sounds too classical but The Elements of style by William Strunk Jr. is a good thing for anyone who writes. Especially for beginners.

I'd prefer books as final resort for this purpose.
Content written by journalists might serve as a better resource. Everytime i swift through, i get to learn new words & figure of speech. I've read a lot of your posts in the past and i must say you're amazing at converging your points of context!

Hope you're off Pepsi:D

Neil Patel's video series was very helpful for me. You can check it out for free

Thanks man :)

I appreciate that comment, and yah I'm off the pepsi for 5 days now... got caffeine tablets at the moment, but it's sent my sleep schedule haywire!

I've always thought about journalists, but I think they are more news oriented.
