I'm currently building links for my site now and I was wondering if I should direct the links to the domain or to the product page mainly? Is there a good ratio?

Build links on the root domain, if you can grab relevant links to your posts than do that.

Homepage should have constant flow of links coming.

And for profits this should be combined with linking to money pages.

Works well for me :)

Okay what if it is for an ecom product and you are wanting to rank the product directly?

Generally you should link to the root domain (domain.com). But more often than not, I find myself building links from forums, guest posts, etc. and in that case I first publish an article for a particular problem that's relevant to the other site, and link directly to that article from that guest post or forum post. Makes sure it won't be deleted. There's no rule as to how much weightage should be given to the root domain vis-a-vis other pages. All links to any pages on your domain are counted towards your backlinks. Whether links to the root domain are more important or not, I don't know.

It's usually difficult trying to get links to a product page, using manual outreach. So one strategy is to create a linkable asset (useful content, tool, widget) that will attract links, then link to the product page from the asset page.

I would recommend to boost up your homepage first.
