Depending on whether it works well with the brandname / niche I sometimes prefer .co .io (or other short ones that are frequently used and have generally good reputation)
.net is boring and .org doesn't always fit but they are still decent choices

Yes, .com is the best extension you can have because it's very memorable. It's also popular. Try to go for .com always.

or just find another brandname If i were to start another high value site, I'd make sure I had the.com the (.co.uk and .UK if it were British) and make sure the name was radio-friendly. Oh and had no hyphens in.
