Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here and I hope this is compliant. I had a question about targeting specific regions with keywords. So my business operates in both the United States and Australia with a .com URL. I want to target keyword rankings in Australia. I live and operate in Australia. Does google know this or is there a way to set this up?

can you provide some examples on what you want to do. i get that you want to rank for XYZ in Australia. if so, what does this have to do with US?

one thing to note: if you want to rank for keywords in australia, you better have most of your backlinks from IPs based in Australia. At the same time if you want to rank for the same keywords for users in US, this could be hard to achieve, because of the whole geolocation IP issue.

are you trying to rank for crumpler?!

There are several things you can do. First, you can target particular markets with TLDs or subdomains. ('example.uk.com', 'example.com.au' or uk.example.com). This method is ideal when you're targeting a multilingual audience. If your users are all English speaking you just have to target keywords with geo modifiers in them. Things like "ABC service in California".

Tried this, basically .com.au will rank easily in australia google and terrible in US google (for same keywords) and this also works vice versa. Maybe for easy niches this is not the case im not sure.

I operate my business in both the USA and Australia. Instead of focusing on targeting the US I would rather focus my ranking efforts on Australia.

Haha I just had a look at Crumpler....I wish I had their sales

Yeah I was hoping I could get with using the .com URL instead of getting the .com.au URL to keep them separate. I was thinking if you include Australia in the content or on the site that google would register it for Australia. Is this possible?

I'm moving up the ranks for my keywords in Australia more so than in the USA so it looks like it's working with the .com URL. I just dont want to invest the money and time into the .com URL only to later realize I should have kept them separate with a .com.au url

Yeah I have been creating content and using longtail with Australia in it and it seems to be working. I'm moving up the keyword rankings in OZ more so than the USA

You pretty much have to optimize for one or another so I would suggest getting the .au or both

You can target a specific country by putting a geo tag in the website and at the same time build backlinks from the website whose IP is in the targeted country. Built more backlinks from the popular website in your country.

If you want to target two countries then it is very difficult. You can target a particular country or all over world. If you want to target any country mention the name of targeted country in the title, heading and content and built backlinks from the popular portals available in your targeted country.

i WAS GOING suggest to focus on .com, even for Australia. use other advices others given for google search console and hrflang and you should be fine.

HOWEVER, I searched for "dui lawyer australia" and the top 10 sites are all .com.au! so maybe it might be time to switch to .com.au.

is there any keyword in australia that has .com ranking higher than .com.au?
