I sometimes check one of my account's follower count on Social Blade and after 12 hours (around 8 pm GMT), it's gained X followers.

By 8 am the following day (GMT), that growth is only half of what it was, like half the number of followers have been removed.

Is anybody else experiencing this? I wonder if Twitter now does a daily clean and remove bots a lot quicker now.

This has been happening for years, not a new thing. If you follow to aggressively twitter will delete all your follows and start you from scratch. When I used to do following I would just keep on like normal as after 3-4 times they would 'stick' and followers were kept.

I've not done follow-unfollow in years, so you're talking about something very different.

I've 3 million followers and don't follow anybody. But when I check after around 12 hours, I've gained X followers - like 2000. Sometimes when I get up the following morning, the gain is only 1000.

So it's like Twitter have deleted 1000 followers during the early hours of the morning.

I'm wondering if Twitter are now doing daily cleans, such as bots.

How do you know it is twitter deleting them and not the users unfollowing themselves :)? Maybe they got buyer's remorse. Or....maybe it was bots, that might be the most likely reason because bots both auto-follow and auto-unfollow after reaching a certain number. So maybe you are just seeing the cumulative effect of that since there are tons of bots on twitter as we all know.

How do I know it's not users unfollowing themselves?
- Common sense.

Bots wouldn't explain why it's only started happening recently. Anybody who is involved in social media like I am will know user behaviour doesn't change like that.

Anyway - just checked today and it's sort of normal. Also checked a few other accounts and they seemed to have had the same % drop which would explain something from Twitter's side.

3 million followers; It is impossible for you to understand who and why the unfollowers are :)

maybe you can do a twitter audit and see what is happening on your side. or may be your content is not the engaging anymore.

That could be a reason if it was gradual, but it wasn't, so I easily discounted that.

Anyway, things seem to have improved and like I say other accounts also had similar blips. Websites visitor count remained steady, so that's the main thing.

Yes they began this earlier in the year for pandemic and elections fake news.

We've discussed it here on BHW earlier in the year. They made it much tougher for any kind of botting, even legit bots.

Twitter doesn't even spare accounts with sheduled posts within consecutive time interval. It's noted as spam and triggers PV much often.
