i just want to confirm that i understand how these things work.

so working from home for a (some) company requires that you are physically present at your location (or state, or county, etc) if i set up a vpn (or vps) at home, and login to the vpn from thousands of miles away. will they be able to see that i am not there? what happens if the vpn has a hiccup?

3. install OpenVPN server

Now on your phone/laptop or whatever you are using

1. install OpenVPN client
2. set all traffic to rout via the VPN connection

Now you will only ever be seen as being at the IP geolocation of the network where you have the OpenVPN server running.

Note

The above would take a few hours to setup/tweak depending on the network setup you have the pi running behind.

thanks for spelling out vpn vps for me. i learned A LOT from your reply. so it appears to be too easy a question for you as for why geo-shifting or masking is not a real thing. i guess i am not advanced enough, and thats why i am asking the question. i just cant tell if you are just pretending to be an expert, or are you so advanced.

Doesn't have to be a raspberry pi, you could do it on anything really, that's just how I do it, I am not an expert at all, I just had a similar requirement to change my location and found this solution which was the cheapest I have found.

OK let's have a go directly at your question.

Q: Will they be able to see that I am not there?
A: Depends on the setup, it is possible but unlikely, if it were me and I didn't want to do the self made VPN, I would create a dedicated sandbox for this, I am going to assume you are on Windows so, create a hyper-v environment and only use this for work.

Q: What happens if the VPN has a hiccup?
A: You can set most VPN's to only send traffic over VPN, which means if the VPN goes down you lose your internet connection till it is back, so you do not leak your true IP

Just use a router with vpn features built in at your home, then travel anywhere and connect thru your routers vpn .. been there, done that .. easy peasy .. =) If it has a hickup, just ask a friend or neighbour you trust watering your plants and restart the router at the same time.

it is a remote virtual computer
the computer/server is physically in the area of your employer (buy an RDP which is located there)
U just control it remotely from your place.

Tailscale is meant to create a direct encrypted connection from any place to your PC/server. You then need to run a proxy server on your PC and have it bind to your Tailscale IP (that 100.x IP, see your Tailscale portal for detail). And from where you are, just set that IPort in your browser or computer settings and you'll exit from your home IP.

You need to install Tailscale on both computers. You can do the proxy server part with proxy.py. Install that using pip.
