ssd laptop hard drive = usb flash drive?

hi guys

I need to download some videos and give them to someone to transfer to his computer.

At first I thought I would buy a flash drive and give him the flash drive.

but then I remembered I am also buying ssd hard drive for my laptop. my laptop hard drive has been making strange noises and I think it's failing.

so I thought what if instead of wasting money on the usb flash drive, I buy the ssd hard drive, and use it for both purposes?

if I connect the ssd hard drive to a computer using an external closure, would I be able to drag and drop video files to it? or the hard drive needs an operating system or whatever to be usable like a flash drive?

ssd is not hard drive.
ssd != usb flash drive.
external ssd is similar to usb flash drive.

Will work, you don't need to have OS on the HDD/ SSD to copy data to a PC that already have another HDD/ SSD with OS installed. Alternative of a flash drive is HDD/ SSD extern, any normal HDD/ SSD can be used like extern too.

It will, yupp. The speed won't be exactly like an SSD if you use an enclosure (mine was usb 3.0... still it was very slow compared to an actual external ssd; for me), but it should be much faster than usb stick anyway.

I would have suggested you buying an external ssd, but since you are going to use it to boot a Laptop through it, I don't think it will look good if your external ssd has to be plugged-in whenever you use your lappy.

So, yeah; go with a 2.5 inch ssd like samsung evo series, that's the best value for money.

I read on some website a blank ssd hard drive won't work out of the box, it needs to be "mapped" first whatever that means
you are saying if I put a blank ssd hard drive in an enclosure and connect the enclosure to a windows machine, I will be able to drag and drop video files to it, much like the way a flash drive works?

yup that should be it. It will behave exactly like a pen drive.

Buy the 2.5" SSD and a small USB 3.0 enclosure, they are very cheap.

You can format the SSD for data only and use it as removable storage. When you've done your file transfer you can then format the drive and use it in your laptop and reinstall your OS.

I already have an enclosure, not sure if it's 3.0 though, I dont think it is, I bought it on amazon for cheap

This is the one I used. It's called Orico enclosure. Google it.

Excellent! When you attach the new drive to the computer it will prompt you to format it. Use NTFS or FAT32.

You can usually tell if it's USB3 as the the inner part of the USB cable which attaches to the computer is blue.
