I have a domain sitting dormant with no content on it but it has wordpress installed. I disabled the "visible to search engines" option which just adds a meta "NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW" tag to all the pages.

So I just had a random idea... What if I backlinked the hell out of it? Anyone ever tried it? Would it be treated any differently than a regular site?

Nop because everytime Google will spider you site, the "NoIndex" tags will do his job and nothing will happen.

hm that's an interesting idea. If you backlink the hell out of the site and it's no follow/no index and them down the road you un-click the no follow/no index wouldn't that give you a hell of a website with a bunch on backlinks and completely white hat? I meen Google would not ban you because those backlink were already there when you created the site and allowed it to be indexed, right?

Ohh, I see what you mean. This could be an interesting idea! Does someone already tried this?

They'll see the backlinks and be like wtf unnatural backlink growth - penalize this site, oh wait we're not indexing it, mark for future penalization if it ever becomes indexed.

Building backlinks still get your site found on Google when you search site:yoursite , you will see only the link but no title and description.
