301 May Algorithm Update Recovery

During the May 2020 update, my pet blog was badly impacted. Dropping from 1,000 page views a days to around 250 page views.

Since then I haven't really touched it, no link building or new articles posted. That was until 2 weeks ago, where I thought I may as well try a 301 to a new domain.

I have a nagging feeling that the domain received some sort of soft penalty during the algorithm update, this is based on a blog that copied my domain in its entirety and ranked well for a few weeks before disappearing. I feel that the content is OK, but Google has labeled something about the domain as being undeseriable.

Regardless, the 301 is seeing some early positive results.

From a consistent 9 to 3, back to where it was pre May update:

I'm curious if anyone else has had success with a 301 and if it lasted?

Seems a bit vague.

Are you saying a 301 initially boosts link juice which will then will drop off with time?

I've never experienced that before.

It could last, it depends on what the original issue was. If your anchor text ratios were off, then the new domain could help dilute them to a better level. I think all you can do is wait and see.

I doubt anchor text was off as I didn't do any link building, I only ever posted content.

Yes and no. Pre algorithm 1000 page views a day, post algorithm 200 page views a day. Pretty straightforward drop from one day to the next.

Rankings dropped across the board.

Despite not building links, I did have links, all natural.

They've updated again recently. What you're seeing is probably a result of that.

I don't think it's the 301.

They got issues since May 2019 in fact, they're trying to fix but can't. Big brands took over, probably because they depend too much on authority which is basically who pays more.

Hmm, the results coincides directly with the 301. I've been seeing the results of an update for the last 2 - 3 weeks, but I dont think this is that. My other sites are seeing fluctuations.
