This definitely changes the game. Usually you were just able to avoid captchas with DBC or other providers.
With facial recognition though, this might be hard..

I don't think its facial recognition in the mean of checking the user's identity
Imo it asks for random movement just to make it harder to bypass
But I seriously doubt the data would be saved for later use, like for example, checking ID at next block
In the event that I'm right, this would explain why such a system can comply with RGPD or any other privacy protection legislation around the world.

Yes, this new challenge might give troubles to many services around. It was just a matter of time since they June 2019 apocalypse, there are really willling to bring down automation ; Q is, i don't think they will do so in a short period of time. Eventhough It's a game changer, but there should probably be some alternatives

They pride themselves that they have 3 billions users. If they go for the facial recognition they will have 50-100 millions max. There are people who don’t like to show their face. It’s not just about fake accounts. This is against privacy. I’m sure the US court wi rule against it in no time.

Let me get this straight. I am a newbie. We have 2 people under 1 acct with 2 different home IPs, not computer savvy. IG once asked me on to verify it was me by providing the phone # and then the pin code sent to it, otherwise my phone and entire account would be blocked.
So I gave phone # of the 2nd person, he gave me the code, I entered it in IG and voila it worked. Now with face recognition: who takes the pic? Are there alternate ways to prove it is an actual human behind the account?

There won't be any privacy lawsuits because I assume Instagram will not record or keep the selfies.
Do not think of this as Face ID. It's more like a Captcha. And what it's meant to do is to make things extremely complicated for those growing/botting many accounts.
If Instagram detects bot activity, it'll ask for this selfie because a bot won't be able to comply with this request.
That account won't be able to pass this selfie captcha test, so Instagram won't allow it to perform any more tasks.
You'll need to pick up the phone and go through the process. This will be very difficult to automate since it will randomly ask you to move your head in different directions, so you can't set it up in advance.
But it won't check if you're the real owner of the account. It won't match your selfie with any other photo.
All it will do is detect if there's a face in front of the camera and if the face moves in the instructed directions.
There's not going to be an employee seeing that, and Instagram will not record or keep the selfies.
And if you still feel it invades your privacy, then you'll have the option of not using it and forget about your account.
This won't be an issue for regular people since the vast majority of regular people won't trigger bot activity flags.
It's meant to make things way more complicated for those automating many accounts.
