It's smaller/faster in some situations so I see the appeal there. On the other hand, it's developed by Google so I can understand not liking it just based on that (lol similar to disliking Material Design just because it's from Google).

Also, not all browsers support WebP so the optimal solution is to also have a jpeg, or whatever, version to serve users on unsupported browsers. So if you have a lot of images on your site you are essentially doubling the storage space required for them.

WebP sometimes has issues displaying for users, depending on what they are using to view your site. I avoid it now. Just optimize your images and in my opinion, is good enough.

Last time I checked it doesn't have full support with browsers so its a no from me at the moment.

However, it could be the future when other browsers catch up. I think Cloudflare currently has a service that will automatically send wepb or jpg files depending on if the browser supports them or not.

I'm always using png before, then I changed to webp format, and got my site way more faster, since most of my posts have 5 - 7 images in it.

you can try to track what browser your user's use, I'm using G.analytics to tracking, and I found most of my site users using Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, so I think I'm good to go.

but it's up to you, I'm seeing good results on my site, find out by yourself, if you find good results or bad results, fast loading pages is one of the most important things now

It's better and makes site faster but has browser specific loading issues. I use it at this time on sites still in sandbox.
I hope these issues will be ironed out in the near future before they pick up.

Webp is not supported by IOS.
My suggestion is to keep 2 versions of the image with the same name but with different extension one .webp and another one .svg.
Also implement lazy loading for images and device detector and change image extension when webpage loading.
