Is it important what category a site was i.e. does my site need to be in the same niche?

Exact niche is not so important, but it better be in the same broad vertical. I.e., phone screens >> satellite internet would be totally ok.

However you can change any site topic with time, you restore or re-build the site in the vertical allied to the old site, wait a couple months until SE's eat it and digest well, and then start adding content in your new vertical, and then when it's digested you can hide the original vertical content to like "archive" category and pull it from the homepage and voila you have a legit site in the new vertical.
