There is plenty of info in this forum, regarding on how to build on top of parasites and how to profit from there. There are some experiments, which even demostrate the power of parasites. But many people struggle to understand why parasites work and the importance of using them when talking about Black Hat SEO tactics. Here I'm going to briefly explain why a Parasite is worth the time and/or the money:
Firstly we have to understand the most important element that make sense to the parasite concept:
There is Google concept to rank pages within the same site, that we can call "internal page rank": this is the number of internal links to certain page from the page itself.
For example, typical newly created profile link from a forum generally have a "0 internal page rank" because they are not even linked from anywhere in the site.
Therefore, despite they could be forcefully indexed with an indexing technique or an indexer from the marketplace, they represent a null amount of link juice to any site (only useful for what is called "linking diversity")
Although, parasites (for example, a campaign in change.org) have a little of extra internal page rank, because the page where the parasite lives, is linked from multiple places in their site (like directories listings).
Same happen with "fivver" gigs, and almost any page that could be considered a real potential parasited page.
So parasites, differ from regular links (like comments or profiles pages) by major two elements:
1. You can put your own content with certain degree of freedom through an online WYSIWYG editor
2. The internal page rank, is more than 0 from the scratch.
Parasites, differ from 2.0 properties for the same reason: internal page rank is more than 0 from the scratch, although some 2.0 properties have also directories where they list their own properties created, which could make them some sort of pseudo-parasites.
But generally 2.0 offer you a subdomain with a completely different page authority, while parasites, are based on an internal folder or url rewrite within the same domain which means, that you inherit the full domain authority, which makes them significantly different from subdomain based 2.0 properties.
This brings us, to the second most important thing of the "parasiting" topic (not parasites itself). This is where we will be really taking advantage of the domain reputation for your own sub page. Meaning, that you can BLAST the page without the risk of a Google penalty most of the times. This type of links are different for example, to a guest post or a PBN, because you CANNOT blast them without hardly affecting the main domain (that doesn't have enough authority to endure the blast).
TL;TR
So these are the 2 or 3 main elements you must know that make the parasites worthy:
1. Editable content + >0 internal page rank
2. Subfolder that holds the main domain rep
3. They are "Blastable"
