Does Adsense Actually Help or Hurt SEO?

I have seen G’s statement that Adsense doesn’t help SEO and is not a factor....after all it would be shady for them to say “we rank sites that we make ad money on higher than those that we don’t”. Even if this was a signal in their algorithm, I’m sure it’s top secret.

I have seen other mentions that Adsense can hurt page speeds and hinder ranking efforts.

My question is simple, has anyone seen a direct impact on rankings using Adsense or any other ad network? If yes, what were your findings and what actions did you take?

Any display ad will affect page load time, but I doubt it will hurt your SEO.

Participating in Google AdSense does not affect your site's rank in Google search results and will not affect the search results google deliver. Google offers broad access to content across the web.

Adsense does not influence ranking. Pagespeed also is not a strong indicator of ranking. I know lots of site that load very slowly but still rank high for thousands of keywords.

kinda true, saw those slow loading sites , design etc kinda crappy , yet their traffic is amazing daily.

No, I don't mean crappy sites. I mean real authority site that load very slowly but still manage to rank high for thousands of keywords.

I think speed isn't a very strong indicator.

The question is about Adsense ads on one's site not ads bringing in traffic.

I don't know if ads bringing in traffic helps in SEO anyway.

Ads slows down your page load time, but not much of a ranking factor.

This has been discussed since the dawn of adsense, and I've never seen anybody reporting increased rankings after installing ansense.
I understand it that some people think that rankings would increase as a real human reviews your site and google knows they are not crap but seems like it's not the case.

Sometimes it may load slower as Adsense is called from other servers but it doesn't help or hurt your ranking. Some people will suggest to keep the Adsense below the fold and put the main content on the above fold properties.
