how does alexa rank work?

Today's hot topic is Alexa HOW in the world does it rank sites?

here is what I know:

1. no matter what they are stating the toolbar has nothing to do with the ranking algorithm.
2. Their rank is based on hits.
3. there are tools in the download section which all they do is hit your site and you gain rank.
4. my rank increases each time their crawler visits my sites.

Therefore I assume they have a way to hack/access site logs and read the hit amounts.

I already use advanced hitting tactics and my sites improves by 300k-500k points per day, silly ranking system...

now the main question is how in the world they access the logs to read the hit amounts??

Wrong. I worked 1 month on a website without the toolbar - Alexa, 7.6mil.

Worked 1 month on another website with the toolbar installed - Alexa 480k.

The server with the script has no toolbar.

They only raise ranks after the crawler visits.

Alexa has a toolbar, but also a script that you can put on your site to show the Alexa rank.

So maybe... use iMacros to visit your sites every few hours

Also Alexa also takes into account backlinks.

Just a few ideas.

Sure, build a script in php that hits your site (meaning downloads a page content or surfs to it) there are tools like "alexa booster" which will do it for you.

run it and you start hitting your site.
from that moment on your rank starts getting better. no toolbar involved nor alexa script in the browser or in the site's code - you don't even need a browser for doing it.

just hit the damn site download a picture or something, that's easy enough, or download your index.html page.

So you're saying Alexa is committing fraud by lying to us in their toolbar description on alexa.com? Oh, they're hacking millions of sites too? Seems pretty unlikely in my book.

I have an alexa bot in my logs. I think its literally named alexabot. Not sure how a bot could read site logs?

Also, your theory doesn't account for the blatant trend that tech sites have a better ranking than non-tech sites even though their visitor count is lower. Why? Because techies are much more likely to have the alexa toolbar installed than people surfing perez hilton's blog.
