Need software for detecting email tampering and keylogger type things on computers

I have the old macbook. I am going to take it in to be repaired. So if the hard drive can be recovered I can then begin data recovery?? ok so then could I end up with a really nice mac again when it's all said and done? So I get my data recovered and a MacBook. sounds nice. It's a white MacBook. ancient. was used when I got it in 2011. I loved it.
yes, if you use same type of hardware you just get data/drive and install on same macbook,
or you can upload "the recovered data" on cloud / drive, then restore it on another macbook.

I think they have installed some paid software on your device!

I have used one in the past from round about that time. It was called eBlaster and it recorded everything - every single keystroke typed, sites that were accessed, people communicated with. Couldn't believe the amount of data you could obtain about any system.

What happens is - they'd need physical access to the system, download it from a link or usb and sync it to an email address where they will receive screenshots of activity and they can set the frequency.
The programme run in stealth mode unless you tell it not to.

I just used it to prank my bro but this is horrible.

Try these things:

Use activity monitor to assess what apps/files are consuming resources.

Then go to finder and find the files for the app and press cmd+shift+. and it will show you all the hidden files and folders for any directory.

Even if nothing looks suspicious in acitivty monitor still do the above check all home folders, root directories etc.

If you get a name that sound suspicious - google it (from another computer otherwise they will get a red alert) if its one of these spyware companies then you can get the police involved.

What country is this?

Hanzo thank you for this. This sounds like what it was. I took the computer to be scanned for a keylogger at the time and they didn't find one. Maybe this is why. This is the United States and it happened in 2012 and maybe even 2013. However if I did the computer and hook it back up and it's still on there, it's 2020 now. He doesn't have that email anymore. The police said that the statute of limitations was 7 years. So if I find they were still tracking me into 2013 when this computer broke, I would still be within the 7 year mark if I hurry.

How is your relationship with your brother now? I hope it's better

Yeah if its a legit installation chances are it won't be detected as suspicious. And some of these programmes like malware bytes antikeylogger etc are hit and miss.
I'm sure even if he doesn't use that email address then there's a trail that will still lead back to him somehow.

He was mad at me for about two days but found it funny after that. Obviously it was just fun and games not serious harassment like this.

Good luck trying to nail this!

are there any programs like stingray that can extract or find it easier?

There probably are some but not any that i'm personally aware of.
Only thing I can think of that i know of are apps that monitor outgoing connection from the device and actually should be able to identify the connection too assuming they're not totally dead.
