Hi! how do do-follow and no-follow tags affect seo? People keep mentioning it in passing. can someone explain it if they understand

Moved to White Hat SEO, but you've got a great answer ^ above.

The rel=nofollow attribute is good to help have a balanced profile, but with the majority as Do-Follow

If you want high DR, UR rank in ahrefs make ******** links

The no-follow link does not boost PageRank.
The do-follow link will pass Link juice.

A nofollow link is a link that contains a rel=”nofollow” attribute in its HTML code. The practical difference is that nofollow links do not pass the link equity (also known as “link juice”. ******** link is used to describe a link that passes the authority as opposed to one that doesn’t. It is not a correct name because there is no such thing as rel=”********” attribute.

Agreed with everyone above. Though I am super not technical on a lot of things. I think about it this way:

  1. Google doesn't want people to manipulate backlinks (yet it happens, we all know that).
  2. So, Google believes that there is some true backlink profile that is better than others (obviously this is a spectrum).
  3. So, Google will naturally want to see no-follow links as any legit backlink profile will have some proportion of no-follow backlinks.
  4. So, If you are manipulating your backlinks in some way it is always good to remember to get some of these no-follow such that you are more likely to be viewed as legit by Google.

Note: I don't actually know what Google thinks, this is just my best guess via reasoning it out.

Do follow means the link juice completely passes on the achor text. In no follow it doesn't. but no follow links still worth it,

Do Follow & No Follow Defines whether the particular link has to considered or Not by search engines. Given the importance of link juice I would say these attributes mean a lot!

******** links help your search engine rankings and pass link juice to your site. A no-follow link is a link that does not count as a point in the page’s favor, does not improve rankings, and doesn’t help a page’s placement in the SERPs. BUT, just because they don’t provide SEO link value doesn’t mean no-follow links are useless. Remember, surely you want a healthy balance of do-follow and no-follow backlinks for the perfect link profile.

D0follow passes link juice from linking site to target site. Whereas nofollow doesn't give any link value but helps in diversification. So you should mix do and nofollow in the right proportion.

How about rel=sponsored - is this passing any juice ?

rel=sponsored is kinda almost the same thing as rel=nofollow. "Nofollow" says search engines not to follow the link (and not to pass link juice through it). It is also used usually automatically on forum comments. Nofollow then is like site owner is also stating to search engine that it doesn't guarantee what is on the other end.

rel=sponsored is telling to search engines that the link was paid. Google has stated very clearly that it doesn't want to take into consideration paid links, so I bet sponsored links don't pass link juice. But as nofollow links, also sponsored links can help to balance out the link profile.

Remember that when linking out from your site, using sponsored or nofollow will guarantee that the link doesn't hurt your own site. (nor pass the juice to whereever you don't want to pass it)

From the technical point of view, the main difference between do follow and nofollow link is the presence of rel=”nofollow”. The practical difference is that nofollow links do not pass the link equity (also known as “link juice”)
