Hello there, I am very confused about this. Assume I choose a focus keyword and optimize content around it. When the content starts ranking, it ranks for different keyword. Now the doubt is, when I try to link building for that post, which keyword should I use? The focus keyword or top keyword which is already ranking?

Use the focus keyword...if now you are raking for Keyword that has more search volume than Focus one, then go for ranking keyword
I guess that's where I missed trick. Many times I've found out low competition topic and keyword. Then built backlinks around that keyword to outrank my competitor. But I was never successful. When I analyze it, it ranked for different keyword. Now I believe the wrong keyword were barriers to outrank them. Am I right?

If you meant anchor text then don't overthink about it. To be safe just keep the exact match percentage low and use different variations where it's appropriate and match the context of your links. If your content is optimized Google will do their job.

Build backlinks for the Both the Targeted and Organic Keyword.

Need more clarification.

You can use ahref to check which keywords rank well on your page. Then add and optimize your content including those well-ranked keywords.

Yes, I use Ahref, my question is even though, I choose a low competition focus keyword for a topic, why does it ranks for High competition keyword which is hard to climb?

Are you using the anchor text for both keywords or only for the focus keyword?

It doesn't matter just focus on your main keyword
and don't focus on single keyword at least find 10 to 15 sub-keywords

Its up to google that pick the keywords which is better to rank. I will suggest you to work on diverse keywords.

Yes, it's upto Google and that's why we tend analyze it's alogrithm and do keyword research to know which keyword is worth to pick. But still it's unpredictable.

It says "Unless you’re a high authority site and already ranking well for a particular keyphrase, you should never use a focus keyphrase more than once" so it depends, right?
