This thread will either get me shredded or get liked.

But here's an unpopular opinion I have about it.

Most SEOs are too busy on client projects or building affiliate sites that they fail to set aside some time each month to improve the asset that's most important: Themselves.

But the good news is this. If you spend 100 hours on a skill that's very specific, you can actually become proficient.

Your new skills will compound your success in ways that might not be immediately clear to you.

I have compiled a shortlist of skills that compliment but extend beyond SEO. I think these skills, combined together, can make for a great digital marketer.

1. Study the public relations skillset. This stretches beyond getting links with HARO. Get familiar with journalist outreach, story pitches, angles, and big media placements.
2. Get a good handle on how to optimize pages for conversions. There are big communities built around mastering conversion optimization. Most SEOs know very little about this space. Traffic x Conversion % = Revenue. It's a fundamental part of the equation we play in yet is very rarely discussed.
3. Become adept at rich media content creation. Video and audio content are starting to play larger roles in SEO.
4. Can you hack together code with PHP? You're awesome. Can you code SEO tools with Python? You're a legend (in my book, at least).
5. How is your copywriting? I know SEOs that can't stand writing because they think they're not good at it. However, this is a skill like any other that can improved. Of all the skills here, I would say this is one of the most important.
6. Paid ads. Facebook, Youtube, Reddit, Quora, AdWords... Need I say more?

The knowledge to master any of these skillsets is out there and either free or very cheap. The hard part is fostering the desire to learn and sticking to it.

Yes they are because there's more to marketing than just seo

I would say yes. Just from my 10+ experience in IT companies and different products/services.

I don't think calling all marketers SEOs do a favor to your list of skills.

I might add that this list should be a desktop wallpaper on all growth marketers, not just SEOs.

I am making full-time income from what I do part-time, online. But, I want to get a job a few weeks after college starts back up so I can focus on 5 key things:

Retail Job
  1. Talking with customers(like dynamic in-person situations to build confidence. )
  2. Customer Support
  3. Logistics of running a retail store
  4. Management of a retail store and employees
  5. possible e-commerce expansion that could help both businesses but it will be a pretty strong play to get a job to pitch my services but I'm gonna try

Thanks for the info. This applies to almost every occupation -- we spend so much time developing our professional skills, but we forget that (self-) marketing is a skill in and of itself.

each marketing path is a set skill.

if you master each marketing method individually you learn a lot but it all takes much time and study.

example.

affiliate marketing with Clickbank and Reddit.

affiliate marketing with Clickbank and Facebook.

affiliate marketing with Clickbank and Twitter.

The three examples above are all individual methods to master and can take many many months of sweat and tears, to reach high earnings.

the best part is once you have mastered getting traffic from any above, you can use that knowledge to earn good money elsewhere.

I no it boring at first but eventually when seeing the 50, 100, 200+ days you soon love it .....

I have done SEO many years not easy but was fun and from time to time I update my self, but I like affiliate marketing, with SEO you can earn grate money but me my self fill like under pressure from clients and I hate stress, so SEO for me only a hobby, but I have already gone thru the pain of learning the algo and kept up for my self only.

SEO has helped me in marketing with server setup and domain concept and money gateways and wp and cloaks and pretty links

it has taken many years to master affiliate marketing and still learning.

my resources are

blackhat forum posts and articles.
blackhat forum members downloads ( books, pdf)
blackhat forum ( udemy free video))
YOUtube.

all I use for marketing.

I find blackhat forum best resource from the whole.net.

Well would you hire a plumber to fix your electrical issue? No.

That's the issue "SEO" might fall under "marketing" you might even consider it part of that broader term however I do not.

I don't think SEO is Marketing. I think if you offered your service as PPC or something around ads then id say you got a chance of it falling under the marketing tag.

Marketing is so broad just as SEO is such a broad term they are both two different things. Would you hire a SEO person to work on your offline ad campaign? No. Would he / she suck at it? No doubt..

Like I said to say are they bad at something is like comparing two different job industries makes no sense.

Makes no difference you are referring as marketing them selfs or marketing for a customer it's not the same thing.
