[DEBATE] Is KGR Really a Waste of Time?

I think I used it years back but it injected a ton of random numbers into my SERP results page so I turned it off, I was just curious about the keyword difficulty score but if its from SEMRush then its probably useless.

I have used semrush for keyword difficulty and in my concept, is an excellent tool. But is sometimes exaggerated. However I have found good keywords there.

Now I have often looked for keywords where there is zero top 10 optimisation and gone after them, but only if there are 2 or 3 big players ( Amazon or Walmart ) in the top 10.

Yes KGR keywords can rank, but only after checking manually and using other tools.

No one or 2 tools are accurate enough to be making judgement calls n by them alone.

I have writers who will write articles for me, some are KGR based, but this is a mix of keywords used on the site.

It depends.

It can be a very low cost way of identifying areas of your niche which are undeserved + you can get started quickly if you are using parasites etc.

If you find a bunch of KGR keywords and then do competitor analysis and see if there is not a lot there then not much to lose.

Then using pretty much any other keyword acquisition method will probably be better as KGRs allintitle restriction will remove a bunch of keywords that are actually low competition. Most of the keywords on one of my domains making >$2000 a month are not KGR compliment when you run the allintitle check but they are low competition.

what is the prblm in trying good kgr terms. diff niches behave differently. It hardly takes time to get kgr terms, make some posts, what is the harm in trying.

If its the one on Reddit with similar modifiers to KGR then I have moved on a fair bit from that, these days I just use the search engine results page with Moz Bar, Keywords Everywhere, and Keyword Surfer. I have put some stuff up on my YouTube channel about it over the last week or so going into the type of things I look for. Most of this month has been based around smashing out content for a new test domain as the 4th May update changed a few things.

I tried this for a fair few articles KGR that is.

You can hit lucky, but there are modifiers that mean you often don't i.e searching TV instead of TVs as an example, which will give you wildly different results in regards to allintitle.

Some still work - I've made good money out of it, but it's not a case of everything you write on a KGR topic will stick, the success rate varies on hitting lucky still.

There are definitely better methods out there in regards to research. I've somewhat given up on KGR as I get a better hit rate on my keyword research.

A few more metrics I've been using when doing SEO competitor analysis;

- total pages indexed on G
site:example.com shows xxxx results.

- use Wayback Machine to check the age of the page/content.

- domain age

- any rich schema markup in results yet?

- check G Images, any of the images have exact match filenames/relevance?

- does YT have exact match video titles?

- is anyone paying for ads for the search term?

I find it best to mix in alternative G properties during the keyword research phase and especially niche selection to get a real gauge of how G likes the current content out there.

If the keyword phrase you want to target is a question and you dont see any rich schema question markup in results, that tells me no serious SEO has been done for the term. Same goes for any schema markup.

Solid advice for anyone just starting out. Too many people want to look for a magic formula rather than churning out content to get data to workout stuff that actually works.

Well put dude, I have lost count of the number of times that I have not taken action back when I was starting rather than just getting it done and testing stuff.

Do you see how keyword research tools will say that a keyword is super easy to rank? but then you analyze it manually and viola! it is NOT as easy as you thought it was! the tool is using some sort of automated formula, and you should know by now that nothing in SEO can be automated.

In a nutshell, KGR is basically a way to find sweet long-tail keywords that are not being targetted by other websites. Hence the search volume / allintitle < 25% formula.

Use your brain, if you have a KGR keyword and you look at the front page and it is showing all e-commerce sites for that product, then you know that is what people are looking for, google is showing them shopping results because it is in line with the search intent of the user, unless you also have an e-commerce site, move on. If you see search results showing highly RELEVANT pages, or pages answering the search query, even if they are NOT targetting that keyword, then again use your brain and move on.

What you need to do is look at the SERP results and see weak sites or even strong sites that are not providing an answer that is relative to the search term. When you get a keyword like that then you know it is something you can target. This is the case with any KGR or Non-KGR keyword.

Use intuition for search intent, and then analyze the results.

Another thing, always check page 2. Do you see a bunch of websites targetting that keyword or synonym terms? If so then again look further and then make your call.

Conclusion: KGR is an awesome way to short-list keywords with high potential. Don't be a moron, analyze the Search Intent, appearance of synonym terms and then shortlist keywords that you can target.
