How do link indexing services (gindex.me, Speed-Links, IndexInject, etc.) currently work? I suppose they automatically build some kind of backlinks to your links but anyone knows the procedure more in detail?

Request a page of their own get indexed in GSC, that page contains the links.

Also via cloaking you can index anything.

Create a URL on your own domain -> 301 to your backlink url -> request indexing with GSC.

I'm not saying this is how the indexing tools do it but it's a pretty simple method that you can do for yourself to force GoogleBot to crawl your backlinks.

Not really, it just redirects the bot to your backlink URL and then whether it's indexed or not is depending on the quality of the backlinking page.
I guess if you're worried about looking spammy, you should use a different domain for the 301 than the domain that the backlink is targeting.
