In regards to tiered links, would it be a case of doing the following;

Setting up a blog on WordPress or Blogspot (example.blogspot.com) and then blasting it with an automation tool to build a load of lower quality links.

Then link it to my main site?

For example, yes. But the tier two doesn't have to be 'spam'. Then there's also links pointing to the tier 2 links which are tier 3 :)

As a different example, you could also build high quality relevant links to a guest post you purchased. Things like this will make a single link very powerful.

Oh great. It's not something I've focused on a lot as I usually build directly to my site.

So what should my plan be? To create a blog and create a couple of articles, all linking to my main site?

You could make a wordpress.com blog with a couple of relevant articles and link back in one of them. Just make it look natural.

I'll take a look and give it a go. Link back in just one post though? Just so I'm sure.

Yeah that's what I do. And also link to like an authority site such as wikipedia in another blog post. Just make it look as natural as possible, and not purely as a website that keeps linking to your money site.

I'll give it a go, thank you for your help, it's not something I've done a lot of, I usually build direct links

Same for me, but a few web 2.0s with links to them will definitely help loads!

I Think there is a thread with this info somewhere..tried looking for it but haven't found it yet

Well, tiered link building is something similar to what you said:
T1 links should be to the point, niche relevant mixed from multiple platforms manually done and good in authority.
T2 should also be good mostly do follow and they are done over T1
Then T3 in any number but okay quality links. Done over T2
