Spend $10 with the goal of getting followers the other day, just to try it out.

$10 resulted in one more follower.

Almost 3000 impressions.

Granted, I was giving no incentive to follow, no giveaway or anything.

And I'm certainly not an expert in advertising.

So, there's my experience, for what it's worth.
