Recently I have came across an article that says you need to have “www” canonical to rank on google? Is this true? Is there Any recent change on google which requires “www” canonical?

AFAIK, only have the canonical meta tag in your www version if you have not redirected to the non www version (or vice e versa); and both have the same content. Otherwise, don't do it.

I prefer withouth www because link looks shorter. There are no differences as far as you use proper non www to to www or vice versa redirects.

Just look at some classic examples of websites that rank/ranked for a lot of kws: ex. https://10beasts.com

Anyone can write an article like that! Even a case study of single site doesn't mean much. AFAIK it's not required to have a www canonical url to rank on google...

You can host a different site per subdomain. The documents pointing to example.com and www.example.com are NOT the same even if you're serving the same content.

You have two options: redirect all your www traffic to your root domain, or keep both sites and use a canonical on the www site (or vice-versa).

I don't think it happens automatically, but I rarely use cpanel. That being said, if you have wordpress, it will redirect itself to the site url. So, you don't actually have to do anything.
