Conversations were clunky as fuck, I always found myself going to other platforms if the conversation was long/serious

They clearly put a lot of efforts in bringing these changes. At first I didn't notice, but later realized that the style had a 3D look which is modern. Some features like user online status are probably in xenforo latest version. They can add more smilies and even gifs too, as that would make the forum more entertaining. There are xenforo add-ons for giphy integration. I don't know if there is much difference in speed as BHW has always been faster for me. The replies are merging with the text, just like code blocks which is a little intrusive into the normal text.

I agree with you 100 percent. I am not a fan of the new look and like you said replies are confusing to look at. It appears faster but in terms of looks and organisation I prefer the old bhw.
